ULSD is more susceptible to water emulsification – water molecules suspended in diesel. This is more difficult to remove than in traditional diesel fuel and is the reason why old technology sedimenters work relatively well removing whole water, but struggle with emulsified water, the contaminant you can’t see that does all the damage.
It’s easy to think that fuel contamination is something that happens “in the bush” but this is simply not true! 72% of all diesel fuel injection system failures are caused by water and fuel lubricity problems? That’s because water vapour condensation in the fuel tank is a constant source of water in diesel. Installing a Direction Plus™ Fuel Manager Pre-filter kit between the fuel tank and the O.E.M fuel filter will remove the majority of water and particle contamination from the injection system – the pump, the ‘common rail’, and the injectors. Water entering the fuel system displaces the lubricating diesel oil, resulting in rapid wear of the pump, but more importantly, the injectors. Injectors move upto 8 times per firing stroke, so that’s 100’s of movements every minute.
CRD injectors cost in the vicinity of $2500 to replace on four cylinder models, nearly double that on the Landcruiser 4.5Li V8 TDi, hence it is well worth spending a few $100’s on prevention.
